Technical Notes These textural reliefs are constructed of acrylic on paper, applied to linen. The support is artists’ linen stretched on heavy duty stretchers and coated with polymer emulsion. An initial design worked out in thumbnail sketches is transferred to the support, and the design evolves as the piece progresses. The paper used is Rives Heavyweight (175G), an archival printmaking paper. This is painted in large segments (e.g., 10x20") with Golden Fluid Acrylics. Both sides of each segment are painted, and after dry the paper is cut down in to individual elements. More elements than will actually be used in any given work are made to allow for maximum flexibility with the evolving design. Each element is applied individually to the support using an archival PVA adhesive. A large work, for example 44x48x6", is constructed of over 10,000 individual elements. |
