LIFE PATTERNS by JOYCE CRAIN

Joyce Crain with piece

Life Patterns, a site-specific fiber piece by Joyce Crain, was commissioned by The Beaumont Foundation. The piece was dedicated on April 20, 2005, along with the work of three other artists. Life Patterns hangs at the entrance to the The Edward Mardigian Family Surgery Center located in the newly constructed South Tower at Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Michigan.

Life Patterns

Life Patterns is envisioned as an object of wonderment, its textures, intrinsic spatial features, delicacy, repetitive detail, and colors are intended to fascinate and stimulate the imaginations of the visitors to the Surgery Center.  At the same time, the intent is to create a meditative, reflective atmosphere.

The muted blue, green and violet colors will both lift and soothe the spirits of all those who come to the Center – especially those who spend long hours waiting for loved ones.  The artist’s aspiration is to create a context where visitors will be able to relax, reflect, and allow their imaginations to flow.  It is intended as a hopeful and tranquil space. When viewed in the architectural setting, the material and colors shift and flicker in the light and seem to be constantly changing.  It is a dynamic aesthetic experience.  Patterns appear to rise and fall, advance and recede. Colors change tonality as they grow luminous and radiate.  The complexity of the visual experience continually enhances the life of the architecture.
