I began working with clay in 1977. In 1984, after completing graduate school, my husband and I formed Creative Clay Works and delved into the business of selling our clay creations.
My claywork has seen numerous changes over the years. I have had fun experimenting with different firing and finishing techniques. Themes that circle through my work involve elements from our natural world and poke fu at the personalities and predicaments of the folks that inhabit that world.
Humor permeates my work. On some subconscious level, I must be seeking comic relief and feel compelled to provide it to the viewer. My cartoon-like characters and creatures take on a life of their own. They've apparently appointed me to be their creator.
All of my pieces are handbuilt from red earthenware clay. They are decorated with glazes and underglazes and are fired in an electric kiln. No molds are used in the process and every piece is created solely by me.
Outside of the studio, I work hard to play a part in our teenagers' lives, explore the vast woods surrounding our house with our three dogs, play in the garden and involve myself with our local community. |
