WILLIAM SCHOLL

I am interested in jewelry as an expression of energy. The materials I work with - gold, silver and precious stones - have a value that far exceeds their intrinsic worth. Using traditional techniques to shape the metal and set the stones, I create personal talismans that emanate both the spirit of the materials as well as my formative intention. My purpose is fulfilled when I see my pieces worn. Nature, jazz and the ancient metalsmiths influence me, but the stones themselves inspire me. Their character, contour and combinations are fundamental to my designs. In my work I pursue two distinct design directions. One is concerned with mechanical problems: connections, hinges and points of articulation. These designs are geometric and hard-edged. The other follows nature's organic forms as seen in the sinuous growth lines of plants and the patterns on the surfaces of the lake outside my shop. To synthesize these two design impulses into flattering, wearable jewelry in an on-going challenge and absorption.
